Het wordt zo langzamerhand een oud verhaal, maar – geholpen door gevestigde artiesten – is vinyl weer helemaal terug. Nieuwe cijfers van onderzoekbureau Nielsen laten ook in 2018 een toegenomen marktaandeel van vinyl geluidsdragers zien.
The Beatles waren de best-verkopende act op vinyl met Abbey Road, the White Album en Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band alle drie in de Top 15. Na The Beatles vinden we Pink Floyd, Bowie, Panic! at the Disco en Fleetwood Mac.
Het best verkopende album op vinyl komt niet van deze acts, maar van the Guardians of the Galaxy OST (een album vol met nummers van iconen uit de 60-er, 70-er en 80-er jaren.
In 2018 werden er 16,8 miljoen vinyl albums verkocht. Dat is 11,9% van het totaal aantal verkochte albums van 141 miljoen.
